Around Ashdown Forest
"Forest" originally meant a place where deer could be hunted and people are often surprised to find that the 6,500 acres of Ashdown Forest is 60% heathland and scrub, and only 40% woodland. Much of the outer limit of the present day Forest boundary still follows the ancient pale whose stake-lined bank and ditch were built to allow deer to enter the Forest but not to leave it. The heathland has been created bycenturies of grazing, woodland clearance and other forms of interference by man. There have been hunting and grazing, the felling of timber and the production or iron. Over the years the Commoners have fiercely defended their rights to the Forest heathland and woodlandresources and today their rights are defended by the Conservators of Ashdown Forest who manage the Forest in accordance with the Ashdown Forest Act of 1974.
